A 3 week experiential learning course for Class 10,11 &12 students & teachers at Abhaya Waldorf School, Hyderabad and a river/lake in South India
The thinking power and capacity for judgment, now fully awakening in the growing sixteen- and seventeen-year-old, require nourishment through experiences that engage reason, observation, logic, and purposeful action. Adolescents seek to form a conscious and independent relationship with the world around them, and this demands meaningful contact with practical life and the achievements of modern science and technology. At the same time, the emotional intensity and questioning nature of this age call for opportunities to explore human, environmental, and social issues from multiple perspectives. In an era increasingly shaped by excessive dependence on gadgets and the internet, students are encouraged to cultivate balance through the harmonious engagement of head, heart, and hands, learning to think clearly, feel deeply, and act responsibly.
The Boats & Engines lesson integrates various aspects of boat building, internal combustion engines, mathematics, art, games, navigation, and geographic studies. Students will explore mathematical concepts, the workings of two-stroke and four-stroke engines, star constellations and planetary bodies used in navigation, and the use of hand tools, electrical tools, GPS instruments, and other technical equipment. The lessons will be brought imaginatively and scientifically by the teachers so that learning remains both rigorous and enlivening. Alongside the technical aspects, students will gain an appreciation for the rich diversity of the surrounding land and water formations and, through interaction with local communities during school activities and a field trip to the lake to motor/sail the boat and develop an understanding of different cultures and ways of life. To strengthen their sense of social responsibility and active contribution to society, students will visit a local community where one of the boats built during the program will be donated for use by the students. In this way, practical work is connected with empathy, generosity, and service to others. The program requires full participation from both students and student teachers, with all participants expected to engage actively in the sessions, apply themselves conscientiously, collaborate responsibly, and meet the timelines and expectations set for the various tasks and projects. |
