Engines & Boat Building Lesson
Engines - Week 1& 2 - 26th Jul - 8th Aug 2025
These lessons will start by building up a solid foundation of internal combustion engines by demonstrating working model engines and 2/4 stroke 3.5/5HP outboard motors . Over the course of the 1st week students will observe how internal combustion engines work. The teachers will build this lesson into a rich learning experience for students to experience and understand the basic principles of internal combustion engines. They will actually get to start and run a 3.5/5 HP internal combustion outboard engine, which will be used on the boat. The Engine lessons combined with the boat building skills will help students in motoring the boat on the lake. Each day will start with a verse followed by the boat building and engines lesson. The main lesson will be followed by intense sessions of boat building, interspersed with games, to help students relax and enjoy the program. The day will end with reading excerpts from the book 'Sextant' .
Boats - Week 1& 2 : 27th Sep - 8th Aug 2025
During the course of this program we will build a 14 foot flat skiff using the stitch and glue method. The participants will learn how to:
-Cut the plywood panels for the sides and bottom, assemble the panels with butt blocks, cut the frames and transom, assemble the hull: sides and bottom around frames and transom, build the fiberglass seams on putty fillets, install the seat tops, build the rubrail, fair the hull, install skeg (keel), sand and paint and finally fit a 5 HP outboard motor on the boat. This lesson will require the participants to work with hand/electric tools , focus on the work at hand and follow all instructions carefully and consistently.
River studies - Week 3 - 9th -14th Aug 2025
After the boats have been constructed they will be transported to the banks of a lake and the students will learn how to row and motor/sail the boats to various points on the banks. They will also draw a profile/contours of the lake, using GPS equipped depth sounders and its depths will be mapped. Elements of surveying, physics, mathematics and engines, will be in integrated and brought to life for the students. Capacities for sound judgement, creative thinking and an enduring enthusiasm for all that this world has to offer , are some of the outcomes for all participants and teachers.
On the last day of this program - 17th Oct, 2020, students will receive their corrected main lesson books/ reports and certificates in the afternoon during the closing and then pack up and travel back home.
